Summary: Makes sand cores used in molds to form holes or hollows in metal castings.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Makes sure cores are produced in accordance with part number procedure sheets
  • Ensures all necessary supplies are on hand before making cores
  • Inspects core boxes for wear
  • Cleans core box with blast of compressed air
  • Dusts parting sand over inside of core box to facilitate removal of finished core
  • Partially fills core box with sand
  • Compacts sand in core box
  • Bends reinforcing wires and inserts them in sand
  • Fills core box and rams sand in tightly
  • Strikes excess sand and scratch and/or jab vents
  • Inverts core box onto a tray
  • Patches cracked or chipped places on core and smooths core surfaces
  • Takes cores to appropriate finishing line
  • Follows job work instructions and training matrix, where applicable.

High School diploma or GED preferred, but not required or up to one month related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Ability:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Math Ability:

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to work near moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is frequently exposed to vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
